Trapper's News

In all my years and travels I have to say the Alagnak is the best consistent uncrowded fishing I'VE EVER SEEN. It is a perfect river for fly fishing and very easy to wade; big open gravel bars with just the right depth and speed for good fishing.

The Alagnak has many small holes and thousands of islands for fish to hold. Put this all together and you've got one heck of a river. As good as a fly rod works, a spinning rod will work even better and is easier to control a fast hard running fish, of which there are many.

The Alagnak's total Salmon run has over a million fish, highlighted by fresh chrome Sockeyes, with July having the heaviest numbers. Our 2005 run was counted at 525,000 fish, the highest count ever. While Sockeye river runs up the Kenai, Russian and Kvichak rivers have fluctuated over the years, the Alagnak has been very consistent, in fact you can keep 5 a day.

The Sockeye is my favorite fish, pound for pound, and the hardest, fastest, most acrobatic fish going, and by far the best eating. I am the man who developed the fly and methods to catch these fish in the mouth till your arms fall off. In fact 99% of our Sockeye will be fair hooked. In July a good fishermen could easily hook 200 of these chromers in a single day.
